These works are three-dimensional drawings, rather like stage sets, where the illusion of volume and mass is confounded by the side view.
The imagery comes from the domestic ware and plays on the idea of the vessel as a container. The body of work depicted here is from the series, which I started in 2007. The work is made from hot glass components that are fused together, water jet cut and then refused into the shape of the final object.
My influences from the art world are slightly eclectic in that I have been strongly influenced by the color field painters from the 60’s and 70’s. However the sculptural works of Claes Oldenberg also informs the work. Whereas Oldenberg takes everyday objects and alters their perspective through scale and context, I am attempting to similarly challenge the viewers’ perspective through the two dimensionality of the “vessels”.
